Sujit Choudhry Speaks in Kiev about the Ukrainian Constitution

Democracy is the greatest gift bestowed upon the world. Like all things cherished, it needs to be protected. Constitutions do just that. Sujit Choudhry was invited to speak among constitutional experts on July 10th in Kiev, Ukraine. There, the Ukrainian system of governance was discussed, along with constitutional challenges that the system currently faces. These include, but are not limited to the electoral system, weak political parties and the sheer concentration of presidential powers.

To say democracy in Ukraine is on unstable ground might be an understatement. A civil war emerged in March 2014 from the presidential election. Those who did not agree with the outcome of the election took up arms and threatened to replace the Ukrainian government and constitution. The conflict highlighted some instabilities in the political parties, as the country was nearly divided in two. The pro Russian and the pro western groups vied for control, leaving the fate of Ukraine uncertain.  Related article on prnewswire.com.

Because of this turmoil, the powers of the presidency were entrenched even deeper in an effort to keep the country stable. The draw back from these actions is now clearly seen by Sujit Choudhry. In his lecture to Ukraine in Kiev, Mr. Choudhry delivered a friendly reminder that constitutions are the framework of a country, and with a weak constitution, the country itself enters the jeopardy of uncertainty.  Read more of his views on politically related issues, click on this.
